Main Review

This show just plain out ROCKS! I don't mean that literally, as some of its best moments are quite mellow. But overall, this show kicks my ass over again and again, and is perhaps my favorite Dick's Picks.

The show starts out the best way a show can, with an incredible Morning Dew. I mean, what can you say about a show that starts with Morning Dew, rather than , say, Picasso Moon? The first set overall, being in the latter half of 1972, features much more jamming than in a typical Dead show. The China->Rider is great, as most versions around this time were. Also, the set -closing Playing in the Band is fantastic, as is the Bird Song, a song that obviously hit its best peaks in '72. All of the shorter is played terrificly as well, as younger songs such as Black Throated Wind and Big River showed they would be great additions to Dead sets, and any show with Brokedown Palace is welcome to my ears.

The second set is even better than the first, starting with a sublime He's Gone. He's Gone seems kinda out of place starting a second set without segueing into anything else, but hey, it's thirteen minutes of the Dead jamming well in 1972, so I love it. Surrounding the massive Dark Star->Cumberland Blues are many short songs. The biggest highlights from these short songs are Deal, GSET, and Uncle John's Band, all played very well. However, the meat of the set, and the main reason I'm sure it was chosen,is because of the massive Dark Star jam. In this Dark Star, everyone is contributing: Billy is using jazzy fills, Bobby seems to be playing all the right chords at all the right times, Phil is thumping away, Keith is slightly less noticeable, but that allows Jerry to dominate! Incredible segue into Cumberland Blues. Just a version for the ages, the only version I think I like more is 9/21/72, but you really can't go wrong with any 72 Dark Star.

Overall

10/10
